Illuminating the Way of Hermes

Events

The Hermopolis Academy

The Hermopolis Academy seeks to ensure that the arts and sciences traditionally ascribed to Hermes are integrally reawakened in the present and future. In the spirit of the ancient academies, we bring polymaths and practitioners together to restore deeper awareness of the ancient Hermetic reality. By rigorously illuminating traditional Hermetic methods for liberating consciousness from conditioned existence, we also hope to offer perspectives that speak to the contemporary human predicament. All who are called to walk the ways of Hermes are considered welcome.

Hermes & Hermopolis

Hermopolis is the “city of Hermes”—the Greek name for the former cult centre of the Egyptian deity Thoth. Identified with the Greek Hermes and the Roman Mercury, the “thrice-great” god is the divine guide who leads the lover of wisdom to gnosis of the luminous source. As the originator of hieroglyphs, Thoth-Hermes provided the coordinating logos of all the sacerdotal arts. In Hellenistic and Roman times, a wide body of Hermetic literature was ascribed to him, which included philosophical, cosmological, and soteriological writings alongside magical, astrological, and alchemical works. This body of writings would be preserved and transformed in Byzantine and Islamicate cultural spheres before being reborn in medieval and Renaissance Europe.

About Us

The Hermopolis Academy grew out of the 2024 Hermopolis Symposium convened by Dr. Mervat Nasser at New Hermopolis, Egypt—a stone’s throw from the temple-tomb of Petosiris, High Priest of Thoth. Throughout 2025–2026, the Hermopolis Academy was consolidated as a Community Interest Company (CIC) to serve a global community of individuals and organisations interested in the preservation, illumination, and dissemination of Hermetic cultural heritage. This community includes students, scholars, educators, artists, practitioners, and other professionals with a specific interest in Hermeticism, its roots in ancient Egyptian culture, as well as its continued historical and contemporary relevance.
